Lost Wax Casting

Weighing the silver.
Last week my jewelry class did lost wax casting. First I made some animals and rings from soft wax, and then they were made into a mold. Here is how we weigh the sterling silver to prepare for casting.

Casting grains in sterling.
This is my silver, weighed and ready for melting! It looks like Nerds Candy.

Here is my teacher, Barbara. She is heating the metal with a torch.

My classmate Leslie is getting ready to cast! I have to say I got a little nervous with the torch and knowing there was hot metal spinning round in there! All turned out well, though...

My casting flask!
And here is the flask cooling off.

My casting tree after it came out of the flask.
Then, like magic, after the flask cools in water and the investment flakes away. I cleaned off my tree the best I could, and here it is! Can you see all the charms and rings I cast? You can see a cat, cat ring, bunny ring, acorn, deer, whale, and more!
