Sketchbook Sunday - Wedding Illustrations

Last autumn Evie emailed me asking for artwork for her wedding. She wanted it in my mori girl style, and I had so much fun making these illustrations to celebrate her wedding. These drawings are based on the photos that Evie sent to me.


I made these illustrations in ink and then cleaned it up and colorized it using Photoshop. I think the colors look so nice, and I really like how her dress looks, too.


Here is the artwork for her thank yous. I really like how her dress pattern came out, and his plaid shirt!


Here are some of the ink drawings that I made, some are not ones that got chosen in the end. I like how they look, though, and it is neat to see the drawings without the colors that the final illustrations have.




I really like drawing in my mori girl style. I am so happy with how these drawings turned out!

Clothes Horse Number Thirteen

Monday was a rainy day, so I wore my Keep rain boots, which I really love because they are really warm and keep my socks and feet really dry when it is puddly outside. Then I had on a cute printed handmade skirt I got in Los Angeles at the Renegade Craft Fair. It was at a booth that had lots of sewing patterns and promoted sewing classes in LA. I love it! I also had on a gray top that tied at the neck line, and I quite like that added touch. I also wore my beloved Prairie Underground hoodie, perfect for rainy days cos I can put the hood up!

Sketchbook Sunday - Acorns and Cute Girls

I have been drawing some cute girls lately! Some are mori girl inspired and some are just doodles.




Here are some acorn heads. I enjoy making new characters and illustrating their clothes and friends.


This is another mori inspired sketch - a girl holding a baby acorn! I love her hair and her bow.


We had a good bit of rain last weekend, so this illustration was made during the rain and hail storms we had last week.


Here is my fawn baby, too. I love drawing animals, especially deer and fawns.

Sketchbook Sunday - Thrift Stores and Self Portraits

I started to draw some things I found at thrift stores and a few self portraits. I like to draw clothes, so I focused on that. I also love to draw bunnies, so I added that, too! Only I am not good at picking up our pet rabbits at all. They are much too wiggly!


Here is a mug, a ceramic planter, and a dress I found at thrift shops. I might put them into a zine some day.


These are some drawings of clothing I got in vintage shops. The first one is me in the 1990's wearing a shirt dress from a friend and some Doc Martens shoes that I bought a few sizes too big. Why did I do that? The other pencil sketch is a top I got downtown - it makes me look like a waitress!


I found this plush squirrel at a thrift sale - and this squirrel is wearing a pink floral pattern dress!

I have been drawing some self-portraits and Mori Girls lately. Here are some of my drawings that are in progress that are happening in my sketchbook.

Sketchbook Sunday - Animal Friends

Time to check out some of my drawings that I have been making lately. I love to draw.


I like to practice drawing some animals, so here are some that I drew in my sketchbook. I love this sloth! They are really neat to watch, if you get to see one in real life. I saw one once at a zoo on vacation when I was a teenager.


There are some squirrels in our 'hood. They like to come and visit Nilla at the window in our craft room. They are adorable and playful. They are fun to watch.


Here are some more squirrels and some of their woodland friends. I love woodland and forest themes, cos I really am a mori girl!


Trying to do more yoga, like this yoga kitty!


I started to draw some more birds, so here is an owl in flight. Now that I look closer, it really looks like this little guy is going to play the xylophone!


Of course I am always thinking about bunnies! This is a happy bunny with a happy carrot.


And last, but not least, here is a bean-shaped bunny. Sort of a jelly bean! Yum!

Sketchbook Sunday - From Memory

Do you ever try and draw from your memory? I like to do this all the time. I tested myself to see how good I could remember how to draw some of my favorite cartoon characters. Can you guess who some of these are?


Here is one of my favorite characters - I love Garfield! I used to read Garfield each week in the Sunday paper, and I had many of those chunky books filled with comics. I loved to see the evolution of Garfield; remember when Garfield was drawn with very small eyes or when he was drawn with very round eyes? Remember when Garfield flicked Odie's nose off and it looked like a jellybean? Or the time Garfield was sleeping? Or when he hated Mondays? Or when he ate all the lasagna?


Here is my version of Gumby and Pokey. What can I say? Who does not love Gumby and Pokey?


I also love Snoopy and Woodstock. I love them so much I had a toy Snoopy and Woodstock when I was little. They went everywhere with me, and if you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up when I was little, I would say "Woodstock."


Last is my drawing of Ren and Stimpy! My brothers and I watched Ren and Stimpy like crazy. We watched it so much we would quote it. My parents even watched and quoted it, too!

Pandas Café

This is a drawing I did a while ago of the Pandas Café. I hope you enjoy these pandas having a hot beverage.

Sketchbook Project - Comparison Drawings Number 7

My final drawing from my Sketchbook Project is of a plush fruit. I love this orange! Raoul gave it to me when he first moved here from California. It is from Giant Robot. We are big fans of Giant Robot and went to almost all the shop locations when he first took me to California. They are made by artist Mari Matsuo. I do not think I got the face right, or the smile, and I totally left off the hair!

Sketchbook Project - Comparison Drawings Number 6

Here is a weather station that used to belong to my Gram Gram. I love this so much, it always reminds me of her and the places she lived. As one can tell, I lost some of the details in this drawing. I forgot about the window, bird, flowers, and mushroom. Silly me!

Sketchbook Project - Comparison Drawings Number 5

I got this ring on Etsy. I do not think they have a shop anymore, but it is from a shop called Hello Natacha. It does not look like she has anything in her Etsy, but I love this ring. As you can see, I really forgot some features of this ring. Where is the hair? The nose? The pressed design around the edge of the flower shape?

Sketchbook Project - Comparison Drawings Number 4

This is a bunny figurine Raoul got from X-Ray Café, a shop our friend Paul used to run here in Athens. X-Ray sold books and antiques. Raoul thought this was funny, so he chose it. As you can see, I had a bit of trouble remembering fine details of this antique. I mean, what happened to his hat, basket, flowers, and coat?

Sketchbook Project - Comparison Drawings Number 3

This is a sketch of my bird-shaped tape roll. As you can tell, I forgot some important details and got a bit of the color and pattern wrong. That is okay, it was still fun to draw this tape roll.

Sketchbook Project - Comparison Drawings Number 2

This is another of my memory drawings. This one is a vintage Avon bottle that my mom found for me at a yard sale. I thought really hard about this drawing, but you can see some of the details that I over looked. I forgot about the cute little cheeks, hair, and the heart is misplaced. Now when I look at this little gingerbread man bottle, I think about the shape of it and the placement and what I forget when I am trying to draw from the top of my head.

Sketchbook Project - Comparison Drawings Number 1

So for my Sketchbook Project towards the end I started to make drawings and watercolor paintings from memory. After I sketched and added color, I photographed the item I drew and attached it to the back page of the drawings. This was an exercise to see how close I came to remembering details of everyday objects, as well as paying close attention to detail. I think this is a fun an interesting exercise to play. As you can see, I forgot and left out some details on this toy Jibibut that I drew. I have some more of these that we can look at and explore in the coming week.

Baby Otters

I was just looking at the very adorable baby otters swimming and thought I would show my otter art. This is a drawing from my Sketchbook Project. We saw some otters at the Georgia Aquarium last summer. I took some pictures of them and went back several times to peek at them. They are fun to watch!

Zines and Sketchbook

So I mailed off my Sketchbook Project and sent it last week! I am excited to have finished it, and I have to say "whew!" to being completed with a project so early in 2011, even though I started it last October. This is the cover of my book.


And then the back cover, too. I also wanted to share that my zine is featured in this month's PikaPackage of zines! Check it out cos there is a give away of this awesome PikaPackage, and there are so many great artists in this collection.
