Meet Me at the Library

Lonna and Katy at the library.
A while ago I got to give a talk at the Oconee County Library. My friend Lonna is the gal in charge of the Oconee County Library Teen Area, namely the section that houses zines! Lonna asked me and local band Werewolves to come to their launch party to give a talk on how I got started making zines and why they are still important today. I have to say, it was a great event and I had so much fun talking to everyone about zines and zine making! It was great.

Me, Lonna, and Katy giving a talk about how we got into zines.
Here I am with Lonna and Katy (Bottle Rocket Zine) giving our talk about zines. It was nice to have Katy there cos she is so into zines, and that is how I met Katy, too.

Making a collective zine at the library.
There was a room dedicated to making a page for a collaborative zine to remember the party that night. There were markers and paper for making pages.

Over 100 zines collected for the library!
This is the zines Lonna collected for the library! It does not seem like it, but there are close to 100 zines in this waterfall display! Lonna said they were donated from all over the world, and this zine library is the only one in the Athens area.

Sketchbook Sunday - Fierce and Nerdy

Working on my comic for fierceandnerdy.com.
Each month I draw a new comic called Dork Lifestyle for my friend Ernessa T. Cater's awesome and funny website, Fierce and Nerdy. This month I drew my Dork Lifestyle about some hot peppers. First I started with a pencil sketch that out lined what I wanted to draw and write in my panels to the cartoon.

In progress.
Next I ink in my pencil drawings. Usually I draw in all the characters and then add the details with pens that are all different thicknesses. Sometimes I draw something to the side that I swap later - in this drawing it is the knife. I drew a new one on the side to replace in the final comic.

Coloring my comic in.
Then I scan in my inked artwork. I clean it up using Photoshop. I scan it in as a color image, then make it to grayscale to make sure my inked line work is crisp. I color it in and convert to RGB at this point. I keep a color palette saved that includes my favorite colors for my hair and skin tones for my comics, so they are always consistent.

Working on my comic.
I love naming my layers! Oh my, I am really a nerd. This is really important to me. You can search your files and find them by layers! I love this.

This is my almost completed Dork Lifestyle comic! You can see the final version right here!

Going to the Girl Scouts

Making comic books with the Girl Scouts.
Last week I visited local Girl Scouts in Hull, Georgia. Their troop leader, Linden got in touch with me cos she saw my comic Tofu Baby in the Flagpole. I was the guest speaker to help the girls earn their comic making badge! Yes, there is really a badge for making comic books! I had no idea cos I wasn't a Brownie or a Girl Scout as a child.

Earning the comics making badge with the Girl Scouts in Georgia.
I first showed the girls some of my comics and zines. I also told them I started making comics and zines when I was 14, and that some of my mini comics are still in print today! I had fun showing them how to make a comic from one sheet of paper!

Comic made By Denise in the Girl Scouts troop I talked with about comics.
One girl was inspired by my Dork Lifestyle comics. Well, at least the name! She made her comic about cooking and mice and cakes. It was really sweet to see them making their stories. Some of them drew ice cream cones melting in the sun in their books, while others made a comic about their phobias!

Comic by Denise, a Girl Scout that I met.
After we drew and colored for a while, we shared some strawberries, grapes, cupcakes, and iced tea with the Girl Scouts. We had a great time, but I was a little sad they were not in uniform and we did not eat Girl Scout cookies.

New Zine, Dork Lifestlye Number 4

My zine Dork Lifestyle 4.
I made a new zine recently! It is called Dork Lifestyle. It is a collection of my comics from Fierce and Nerdy. Fierce and Nerdy is a great website that my good friend Ernessa T. Carter created. If you don't read it, you should!

Not only does this issue of Dork Lifestlye feature my comics about hitch hiking, Henry Rollins, and high school, but it also shows some new comics that were not published on the Fierce and Nerdy website and that are only available in this issue! Super!

You can get my newest zine on my personal website here, or at Shoppe Sugar Cookie on Etsy!

Fluke There It Is

Fluke 2012 table. Check out all my comics and zines!
Fluke 2012 was so much fun! We had our table set up with all of our comics and zines, plus I added some of my Tofu Baby plush and cupcake plush. Oh, and lots and lots of one inch buttons!

Our table at Fluke 2012!

Fluke 2012.
Fluke is held at the 40 Watt club in down town Athens. It used to be at another club called Tasty World, but then the event grew so much that this venue is needed now. I really like being at the 40 Watt cos it is such a great place in Athens to see bands play. Now it is a great place for self publishing!

Fluke - meeting Tofu Baby fan Katie!
Here is our new friend Katie! We met her friends, too - so that was really great! She is a fan of Tofu Baby! We had a good time having dinner with them. I was so tired by the end of the day that we had to eat burgers and fries at Clocked, the diner up the street. It hit the spot after a long day of talking to everyone at the fair.

Meet the Monkees

Here is my comic that I made after my pal Nathan and I went to see the Monkees in Columbus, Ohio in 2001. I hope you enjoy this comic as much as I do, and you can read more in my self-published book, Personal Charm. Personal Charm is my book that collects most of my comics from the zine I did in college and high school called Pocket. Now, on to the Monkees...
