Illustration Friday - Wheels

Dog on wheels watercolor.
The word for the week on Illustration Friday is wheel. I decided to draw a dog on wheels toy! I made my illustration in watercolor and colored pencils. I really like the soft colors and how it looks - plus it is inspired by one of my favorite songs by Belle and Sebastian!

Illustration Friday - Identical

Illustration Friday - Identical
My drawing for Illustration Friday! This illustration is for the word identical. Did you ever wish you had a twin? Sometimes I wish I did, but that nobody knew of this twin! So I can send the twin to work while I slept in, stayed home, played with the pets all day! I would get so much done that way.

Illustration Friday - Jump

jump
The word on Illustration Friday this week is jump. We all know how much Oreo and Jumbles like to jump, right? They love to jump. I love seeing them do happy hops and "binkys" in our patio. They can really get going! I never get tired of watching our pet bunnies.

Illustration Friday - Return

Illustration Friday - Return
The word of the week on Illustration Friday is return. I chose to illustrate my first cat, who I loved very much. We called her Garfield because I loved the comic strip Garfield by Jim Davis. I suppose this is not the best name for a cat who is all black in color, but it stuck. Anyways, I will tell you some about this kitty. Someone dumped her in the cemetery near my home in Pennsylvania. We took her in, but she was really shy and skittish at first. I think it took my family about six months to coax little Garfield inside the house. She finally came in when it got cold outside, and she was an indoor/outdoor cat her whole life. One day my mom took Garfield to the Humane Society to get her shots. My mom did not know to maybe try to put the cat in a carrier box, so she used a harness. Well, Garfield squeezed her way out of the harness and ran into the woods near the Beaver County Humane Society! I was about seven years old at the time, and I was super attached to the cat at this point, and I cried and cried when I heard this news. That evening, my family and I took some of Garfield's favorite food (Friskies in the purple box) and placed it near the woods and called "Garfield! Garfield!" in hopes to get our beloved kitty to return home. We did this a few nights in a row. We would put Friskies, we would put hamburger bits, we would call "Garfield! Garfield!"

Then, one evening, my mom, dad, and two brothers all were calling for Garfield. We put down the food and called out into the woods. All of a sudden, out came Garfield for a bite of food! My mom immediately grabbed her and we all went home as a happy family. I was overjoyed to have my cat return home!

We had Garfield for sixteen years. I still think about that cat and how much I love her. And how much I miss her! Here are some of my pictures of Garfield.

Plus, Garfield graced the cover of my zine, Pocket! I love this photo of her!

Illustration Friday - Shades

Illustration Friday - Shades
Here is my drawing for Illustration Friday. The word of the week is shades. I am almost certain many people will be going with sunglasses as inspiration. My girl is wearing star-shaped sunglasses and is inspired by the artwork for the 7" single called "Yer So Sweet" from the band Cold Cold Hearts!

Illustration Friday - Intention

Illustration Friday - Intention
The word for the week on Illustration Friday is intention. I used to take yoga classes, and when I did sometimes the instructor would talk about intention and practicing yoga with intention. In my drawing, this kitty is sealing his yoga practice with intention. Namaste!

Illustration Friday - Popularity

Illustration Friday - Popularity
The word of the week for Illustration Friday is popularity. I had a tough time with this word! I was not sure what to draw, but I wanted to draw some koalas. In my illustration, they are cheering for the littlest koala. The littlest koala is the most popular now because he baked eucalyptus pie for the entire town on a day when the koalas were particularly hungry and down in the dumps. They were a little sad because they lost their favorite kitten who fell down a well. The kitten was found, though - a little later on that day. Their favorite kitten was just hiding in the bucket in the well!

Illustration Friday - Twirl

Illustration Friday - Twirl
The word of the week on Illustration Friday is twirl. I drew these cats with their tails twirled together! I guess this is how I would like Nilla, my beloved all-white kitty, to be with other cats. Instead Nilla is not too friendly with other kitties. When she sees them outside she throws herself against the picture windows in our living room. She gets so territorial, she tries to chase them away, even if the other cat is friendly and rubs on the window. Maybe it is best that Nilla is the queen bee at home. I think she likes to have me all for herself! I am lucky she shares with the bunnies, and she really does like them, too. Twirl, Nilla! Twirl!

Oh, they said SWIRL!

Illustration Friday - Round

Illustration Friday - Round
Round is the word of the week on Illustration Friday. I decided to draw a cute kitten that is super round. As you may know, I love kitties, especially ones that are snow white like my cat, Nilla. This illustration is inspired by Nilla and how round she can make herself at times. Let's see how roundy that cat can be...

The puff stole Raoul's seat.

Illustration Friday - Vanity

Illustration Friday - Vanity
The word of the week on Illustration Friday is vanity. Here is a little spot illustration that I made for CROQ Zine a few years ago. This was for their article on DIY Beauty! It makes me think of the song "Hall of Mirrors." I really love these homemade videos from Youtube.

Illustration Friday - Stripes

Illustration Friday - Stripes
The word for Illustration Friday is stripes. I decided to make some of my animals wearing some of my favorite things - stripes and dots! Who does not love these two things together? When I was in high school I used to wear all different striped patterns together in my outfit. I loved it, but then some of my classmates told me I looked like a tv test pattern. Do tvs still have test patterns anymore? Does anyone remember those? Anyways, I thought I looked cool and was doing something different!

I also added this pattern to my Spoonflower Fabric Shop. It will be available very soon so you can make some lovely things from this pattern!

Illustration Friday - Hibernation

Illustration Friday - Hibernation
The word of the week on Illustration Friday is hibernation. So I drew a little fox hibernating. My mom told be they have a red fox living in their neighborhood in Pennsylvania! They saw it a few times now. I wish to see it when I visit sometime. I feel like hibernating lately - we are just getting some nice cool weather here in Georgia. I tis much needed after such a long summer. I am loving the chilly mornings and having the house be colder inside than it is outside. It really makes me want to hibernate in my bed!

Illustration Friday - Obsession

Illustration Friday - Obsession
Okay, so when I saw the word for the week at Illustration Friday was obsession, I thought I would give it a try. I was inspired by the Kitchen Sisters series on NPR called the Hidden World of Girls. Have you heard this before? A while back they did one all about Dolphins, Unicorns, and Horses. They described how many girls at a young age really get obsessed with these animals. As a child I had a sticker book of unicorns and I had a drawing book of horses. So I guess I can identify with this obsession to a point... But to be honest, I really love cats and rabbits! I really enjoyed this story, so give it a listen on my link.

Illustration Friday - Perennial

Illustration Friday - Perennial
The word for Illustration Friday this week is perennial. For this illustration, I looked to some of my favorite garden websites and gardens for inspiration. I really like You Grow Girl for good gardening basics and tips. I also love the HDYGG blog on Readymade, and I am really sad to see Readymade the magazine fold. We also enjoy visiting different gardens, too, like this local favorite.

Illustration Friday - Asleep

Illustration Friday - Alseep
The word for the week on Illustration Friday is asleep. I made this little kitty cos, well, kitties like to sleep! I also think about sleep a lot. I have trouble sleeping most of the time. My sleeplessness is for a few reasons. Nilla likes to paw at my bedroom door at odd hours - lately it has been at 4:30 am. Usually I give her one treat, then she settles down. But I also suffer from restless legs. I have not slept in years because of this problem. I can usually do some stretching or sleep in crazy positions to relieve the pain and "buggy" feeling in my legs, but some nights it is awful feeling. So when I can be asleep, and by asleep I mean a sound, good sleep that is not interrupted, I am as happy as this gold kitten in my illustration!

Illustration Friday - Safari

Illustration Friday - Safari
This week's word on Illustration Friday is safari. I enjoy drawing animals, so I made a panther, lion, and tiger - the BIG CATS! As you know, I love cats! I also love looking at this website called Zoo Borns. Zoo Borns shows so many amazing animals, it os sort of like being on a safari, or else a really nice trip to the zoo. I especially love the baby animal pictures. They are so cute, I even tear up a little looking at some of them.

Illustration Friday - Bicycle

My Bicycle Button.
Last week's word for Illustration Friday was bicycle. I totally got busy with the usual weekly stuff and projects that I did not get to officially submit and post this until now. Here is my bicycle that I drew and made into a one inch pin back button!

Bicycle Button
It is fitting that I post it this weekend, cos this is the weekend for the Twilight Criterium bicycle races here in Athens. It is a fun event - we like to watch the cyclists round town, and it is always very busy! I would also like to give a shout out to my mom's place of employment, Aero Tech Designs, where she makes and sews gear for cyclists! She is a great seamstress! Very cool!

Since I can't find any of my Twilight bike race photos, I will just post some of my favorite photos that I took of bicycles!

bikes parked along the corner.
These are bikes in Shanghai, China. This is near the big walking street, I think it is called Nanjing Road. It is nice there because it is just made for walking, so everyone goes there to shop and walk. You do not have to worry about cars!

Bikes!
This is the bike hitch in Seattle, Washington. I thought it was cute design!

let's ride bikes
Here is the yummiest bicycle by far! This is a bread bike from ARené-Gérard de St-Ouen, a very cute bakery in Paris, France. All of the breads are made into adorable shapes! I had a bunny when I went.

Illustration Friday - Toy

Illustration Friday - Toy
Here is another drawing of mine for Illustration Friday. This week's word is "toy." As you may know, I love toys! Sometimes I even sew and make toys. This illustration is of my Long Bunny Plush I made a few years ago.

Long Bunny in China 1
This Long Bunny in particular was made to be a travel companion. I took this with me when we first went on a business trip to China and Hong Kong. These are pictures Raoul took. This was in 2008.

Long Bunny in China 2

Long Bunny in China 4
What a great travel buddy! This Bunny was great on my plane rides and car rides cos I could fold her and use this softie as a pillow. Needless to say, she is also very worn out and loved today. She does not look as "fresh" as in these photos.

Illustration Friday - Layers

Illustration Friday - Layers
Here is my drawing for this week's Illustration Friday word layers. Raoul gave me the idea for it, but I have always had a soft spot for chickens. In fact, as a child I had a toy rooster and hen instead of a teddy bear!
